NFL Totals Betting
Scoring is up significantly in the NFL this betting season, as offenses continue to put up huge numbers throughout the league. Through the first eight weeks of the 2020 NFL calendar, the league is on track to set a number of offensive records, including the most total points (5,996) and touchdowns (692).
While this year’s high-scoring action makes you want to start betting the over in every NFL total on the board, there are still several teams who have managed to keep most of their games under the key number. If you enjoy wagering on NFL totals and want to boost your odds of a betting win, it’s important to know which teams will give you the best chance at hitting the over, and which teams are more likely to stay under.
Top 5 NFL OVER Teams and Why
-
Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks position atop this list should come as no surprise after going over the total in seven of their first nine games this season. Russel Wilson led Seattle’s offense to a league-best 34.2 PPG so far this season with the help of star wide receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. As if that weren’t enough, Seattle’s defense has been historically bad allowing 30.4 PPG to their opponents. Combined, the total in Seahawk games so far this season has been a staggering 64.6 PPG!
-
Green Bay Packers
Wisconsin’s cheeseheads have been delighted with their offense this year, as the Packers have been putting up points with ease. Aaron Rodgers is back to his dominant self this season, terrorizing opposing defenses and spreading the ball all over the field. Rodgers also has help in the form of elite WR Davante Adams and hard-running RB Aaron Jones, which is why Green Bay has gone over the NFL total in six of their first nine games. Betting the over in the Packers’ games is a solid strategy to win some cash on most weeks.
-
Atlanta Falcons
This year’s Falcons squad combines its talented offense with a leaky defense, and that’s a great way to hit the over in your NFL game totals. With Matt Ryan, Todd Gurley, Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley, it’s pretty clear what the Falcons can do on offense, but the defense has also been part of the reason they’ve hit the over so many times; Atlanta’s stop unit has been terrible at closing out games this season, defying the odds by blowing double-digit leads and surpassing the game total on several occasions.
-
New Orleans Saints
Despite what critics say about Drew Brees’ 41-year-old throwing arm, the veteran quarterback has allowed New Orleans to hit the over in seven of their first eight matchups this year. It helps that RB Alvin Kamara has been everything the Saints were hoping for and then some when they signed him to a big extension earlier this season. With star receiver Michael Thomas only now getting healthy and returning to action, you can expect plenty more points to come out of New Orleans the rest of the way.
-
Houston Texans
Some may be surprised to see the Texans on this list when you consider their terrible record and sputtering offense; yet Houston has duped NFL totals odds makers by hitting the over in seven of their first eight games this season. The Texans have long been known for a solid defensive front, often leading to a lower total for their games, but that has not been the case in 2020. Houston’s defense has been terrible this year, giving up 28 PPG and causing nearly all of their games so far to go over the key number.
Top 5 NFL UNDER Teams and Why
-
Los Angeles Rams
A simple yet effective strategy for successfully betting the under in NFL games is to focus on matchups that include two-time DPOY, Aaron Donald. The Rams’ star DT is a defensive force who has the ability to shut down opposing quarterbacks with his incredible strength and athleticism, increasing your odds of staying under the game total. With a stout defense and an offense that loves to run the ball and eat up the clock, the Rams have stayed under the total in all but two of their games so far this year.
-
Arizona Cardinals
The Cards boast a dangerous offensive unit led by QB Kyler Murray and WR DeAndre Hopkins, yet Arizona has stayed under the number in six of the team’s first eight games. Inconsistency has been partly to blame as Murray is still getting comfortable as an everyday NFL quarterback, but much of the credit is owed to their strong play in the secondary, notably CB Patrick Peterson and S Budda Baker. With the odds makers consistently setting high totals on Cards games, taking the under has been a lucrative strategy thus far.
-
Chicago Bears
Chicago has stayed true to its franchise identity in 2020 with an elite defense that has only allowed 21.1 PPG so far this season, yet their offense continues to struggle. It doesn’t matter if its Mitch Trubisky or Nick Foles at the helm, neither quarterback looks like they’re going to run up the score on a team any time soon. The Bears have stayed under in six of their first nine games, and that trend is likely to continue.
-
Baltimore Ravens
Having a strong running game or an elite defense are two of the best ways to hit the under in NFL games. Both are true in the case of the Ravens, which explains why their games have averaged just 45 total points per game through the first half of the season. Baltimore is not only the second-best rushing team in the NFL, but they also have a defense allowing the fewest points per game in the entire league. Put all of that together and you have greats odds at seeing some low-scoring football.
-
Washington Football Team
While all four teams in the NFC East could make a case as one of the league’s better under bets, injuries and severe lack of talent has led to a number of low-scoring contests for Washington. With their starting quarterback hurt and no real playmakers outside of WR Terry McLaurin, Washington has tied or stayed under their game total in five of eight games so far this year. With the check-down machine Alex Smith now starting at quarterback, it looks like we could see that continue the rest of the way.
