Gastelum Heavy Fight Night Odds Favorite
- Updated: March 10, 2017
Kelvin Gastelum will be looking for a third straight victory in the octagon when he takes on former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort on Saturday in the main event at UFC Fight Night 106 as a heavy -380 favorite.
The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner returns to action after claiming a stunning third-round TKO win over Tim Kennedy at UFC 206, lifting his pro MMA record to 13-2 ahead of Saturday night’s middleweight matchup at Centro de Formação Olímpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil.
Gastelum accepted that fight against Kennedy on short notice after Rashad Evans was forced to withdraw, opening as a slim underdog before pulling virtually even on the UFC odds.
The 25-year-old also claimed a unanimous decision victory over former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in a UFC 200 fight pegged as a pick’em, but suffered a stunning split decision loss in a five-round welterweight clash with Neil Magny as a -360 favorite at UFC Fight Night 78.
Belfort looks for just his second win in his past five octagon appearances as he meets Gastelum as a +290 underdog. The Phenom was stopped in the second round in his last outing, losing by TKO to Gegard Mousasi as a +250 underdog at UFC 204, and failed to pay out as a +230 underdog in an opening-round TKO loss to Ronaldo Souza at UFC 198.
However, the 39-year-old Brazilian dominated in a first-round KO victory over Dan Henderson as -365 chalk in the main event at UFC Fight Night 77, and cannot be underestimated after needing less than five minutes to claim victory in seven of his past eight wins.
Rua and Barboza Also Favorites on Card
In other UFC Fight Night 106 betting action, light heavyweight Mauricio Rua looks for a third straight victory when he battles American Gian Vallante as -145 chalk.
Shogun earned a split decision win over Corey Anderson as a +135 underdog at UFC 198, but needed a full three rounds to claim a unanimous decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira as a heavy -225 favorite at UFC 190.
Villante sports +115 odds in his pursuit of a second victory. The former Ring of Combat heavyweight champion ended Saparbek Safarov with a second-round TKO as -200 chalk at UFC Fight Night 102, but has posted consecutive wins just once over his past nine fights.
As well, Edson Barboza is perched as a -175 favorite in his lightweight bout with Beneil Dariush, who trails at +145, while Marion Reneau is a narrow -120 favorite in her women’s bantamweight tilt with Bethe Correia, who is a +110 underdog.
