Types of Wagers for the Kentucky Derby

Learn How To Bet On The Kentucky Derby - Bovada Sportsbook

Classic Empire and Always Dreaming are co-favorites on the odds to win the Kentucky Derby with the first event of horse racing’s triple crown season on tap for Saturday at Churchill Downs. And both horses are likely to see plenty of win, place, and show action this weekend.

Win, place, and show wagers are known as ‘straight bets’ in horse racing, and are the most straightforward way to get action. Of these, the win bet is the most lucrative wager – in order to get a payout on a win bet you have to select the horse that finishes the race in first place.

The place and show bets don’t pay off as well as the win bet, but they’re also not as difficult wagers. For a place bet, you select a horse and get a payout if that horse finishes the race in either first place or second place. For a show bet, you select a horse and get a payout if that horses finishes in first place, second place, or third place. The exact placing doesn’t matter.

For example, if you wanted to wager on Classic Empire you would get a payout on a win bet if the horse finished first, on a place bet if the horse finished first or second, and on a show bet if the horse finished first, second, or third, with diminishing returns based on the wager type.

For the more ambitious bettor, exotic wagers will also be available for the Kentucky Derby this weekend. The basic exotic wager is the exacta, where you have to pick the horses that will finish first and second in the race – in exact order. If you picked Classic Empire to finish first and Always Dreaming to finish second in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday with an exacta wager, you would get a payout only if there was a Classic Empire-Always Dreaming 1-2 finish.

With a trifecta exotic wager the bettor has to pick the horses that finish first, second, and third in the race. A superfecta is an even more difficult – and lucrative – exotic wager, where a bettor has to pick the horses that finish first, second, third, and fourth in the race. An alternative exotic wager is then the quinella, where like with an exacta the bettor has to pick the top two finishers, but they do not have to pick the exact order in which they cross the line.

Classic Empire, Always Dreaming Favorites

And bettors looking to place a wager on the Kentucky Derby early this week can find Classic Empire and Always Dreaming as 4/1 co-favorites on the futures, with Irish War Cry third at 13/2. McCraken is set at 7/1 odds, with Gunnevera at 12/1. Gormley, Practical Joke, Thunder Snow, and Girvin are all pegged at 16/1 for the race.

The draw for post positions for the 2017 Kentucky Derby will be held on Wednesday morning.
