Price OVER/UNDER set for Tupac’s Letter to Madonna

Tupca's Breakup Letter To Madonna

Music fans will get a chance to bid on some Madonna memorabilia this summer, including a letter written to her by the late rapper Tupac Shakur discussing their mid-nineties breakup. And prop odds for the letter have set the OVER/UNDER on the sale price at $250,000 USD.

The January 1995 letter, written while Shakur was in prison at the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York State serving a 4.5-year sentence for sexual abuse, details the rapper’s thoughts on the relationship between the artists, which Madonna has confirmed took place in 1994.  Shakur cites race as one of the reasons why the pair’s relationship had to come to an end:

The Shakur letter states “For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting. But for me at least in my previous perception I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was. I never meant to hurt you.”

Shakur was released from Clinton Correctional Facility on bail posted by producer Suge Knight in October 1995 with his case on appeal. In September 1996 Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas after attending a boxing match with Knight between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand. Conspiracy theories still swirl around that event.

Odds on Sale of Tupac’s Letter to Madonna

Tupac’s letter to Madonna, then, is expected to attract great interest when it goes up on the auction block this July, along with many other of her personal items including a hairbrush, various pieces of clothing and jewelry, other letters, and lyric sheets. The odds on Tupac’s break-up letter to Madonna fetching OVER $250,000 USD are set at even-money, while the UNDER option is the slight favorite on the prop at odds of -140 heading into the summer.

The starting bid for the Tupac letter is set at $100,000 USD. Madonna had a restraining order filed in an attempt to quash the auction in 2017, but a New York City judge ruled last month that the auction could proceed. Darlene Lutz, an art consultant and former Madonna friend, has possession of the items in question, which also include a headpiece from the movie Evita.

Madonna has been a fixture on the pop music scene since the early 1980s, earning superstar status with the releases of Like a Virgin, True Blue, and Like a Prayer from 1984 to 1989. The singer also branched out into acting, most notably in Dick Tracy, A League of Their Own, and Body of Evidence in the early 1990s, along with Evita in 1996. Madonna’s most recent album was 2015’s Rebel Heart, which was the 13th studio album released since her 1983 debut.
