Tagovailoa Gaining on 2018 Heisman Odds

It has been seven months since Tua Tagovailoa captured the spotlight in the 2018 College Football Playoff national championship game, taking over under center at halftime to lead Alabama to a 26-23 overtime victory over Georgia and claim offensive MVP honors.

The 20-year-old was rewarded for his championship heroics with strong +1000 opening odds to win the Heisman Trophy in the upcoming campaign. And while Tagovailoa has yet to win the Crimson Tide starter’s job outright, his stock has continued to rise, positioning him as the second favorite on the 2018 Heisman odds as a +750 wager.

Tagovailoa saw limited action last season prior to his dramatic performance against the Bulldogs, completing just 35 total passes over seven regular-season appearances while acting as Jalen Hurts’ understudy. However, the former Hawaiian high school star continued to develop during his freshman campaign, and reportedly has gained a clear edge over Hurts to earn the starting job when Alabama opens its schedule on September 1 with a Week 1 matchup against the Louisville Cardinals at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Pegged as the top-ranked recruit among dual-threat quarterbacks entering his freshman season, Tagovailoa has drawn comparisons to Seattle Seahawks pivot Russell Wilson. But he must prove that last season’s national championship success was no fluke by demonstrating he can handle the rigors of the starting job for a Crimson Tide squad pegged as +190 favorites to repeat as national champions.

Love Tops the Heisman Trophy Odds

While Tagovailoa is among the big movers on the Heisman Trophy odds, he continues to trail Stanford running back Bryce Love, who tops the odds board as a +700 favorite.

Love enjoyed a breakthrough in his junior year last season, scampering for a career-high 2,118 yards and 19 touchdowns. That performance earned him a second-place finish in Heisman Trophy voting, trailing only Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, who later went on to be the top pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Love will now be expected to take on a leadership role on a youthful Stanford squad that is pegged as a +650 bet to win their first Pac-12 conference title since 2015.

Perched as a +750 favorite on the opening odds to win Heisman Trophy, Wisconsin rusher Jonathan Taylor has slipped to +850, but remains well ahead of Ohio State pivot Dwayne Haskins at +1100, while five quarterbacks sit deadlocked at +1500, including Georgia’s Jake Fromm, Arizona’s Khalil Tate, West Virginia’s Will Grier, Trace McSorley of Penn State, and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.

Taylor emerged as a major contributor to the Badgers’ offense during his freshman year in 2017, eclipsing 200 rushing yards on three occasions to finish the season with 1,977 yards and 13 touchdown runs. However, the 19-year-old is expected to face stiff competition for carries from a host of freshman rushers in camp, and owns tempered -115 odds of running for OVER 1900.5 yards in 2018.

Haskins is expected to take over the Buckeyes’ offense after seeing significant action in just one game last season while playing in the shadow of JT Barrett, but inherits an Ohio State squad that is expected to take a step back in the upcoming season, and is listed as a -140 bet to win UNDER 10 games for the first time since 2011.
