Raiders, Saints Seek End to Negative Week 1 Trends in Sunday Opener

Raiders, Saints Seek End to Negative Week 1 Trends in Sunday Opener - Bovada Sportsbook

Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders will be out to validate some preseason playoff hype when they visit the New Orleans Saints as a slight underdog in their NFL season opener on Sunday afternoon. The Saints are just a one-point favorite against the Raiders, with a total of 51.5 points, ahead of the interconference showdown at the Superdome.

The Raiders come into the season with a number of negative trends that a franchise would almost have to try to achieve. That includes being 1-12 straight-up in their last 13 games in Week 1, along with being 0-7 ATS in their last seven games with a closing total of 51 points or more.

They are also 1-7 ATS in their last eight games against the Saints. However, Carr has a better supporting cast than he did during his first two seasons, with big-play wide receiver Amari Cooper, an upgraded offensive line and running back Latavius Murray. Cooper will likely have a tough matchup in the form of Saints cornerback Delvin Breaux, but New Orleans was dismal in coverage against all types of receivers last season and hasn’t changed their pass coverage personnel.

New Orleans Looks to Drew Brees

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees is New Orleans’ saving grace, even at age 39, but the Saints are 1-5 ATS in their last six games in Week 1 of the season. New Orleans is also 4-10 SU in their last 14 games after a win.

Brees’ best receiver, Brandin Cooks, is a speedster, but he is giving up five inches in height to Oakland cornerback Sean Smith. That could affect New Orleans’ ability to move the ball in small chunks.

On the other side of the ball, the Saints will encounter a top pass rusher, Oakland linebacker Khalil Mack, and one of the best ball-hawking defenders, safety Reggie Nelson, who led the NFL in interceptions last season. Oakland has potential for the sudden-change plays that can swing a game heading into Sunday’s opener.
