Patriots NFL Betting Underdogs in AFC Title Game

The New England Patriots will be looking to halt a three-game losing streak on the road during the NFL playoffs when they visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in this season’s AFC Championship Game as 3-point underdogs on the NFL conference championship odds.

New England punched its ticket to an unprecedented eighth straight appearance in the AFC Championship Game with an impressive 41-28 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Divisional Playoff action last weekend, and the Patriots are now undefeated straight up in three outings ahead of Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Patriots have got the job done on both sides of the ball during their current surge, outscoring their opponents by a wide 103-43 margin while rewarding bettors with wins against the spread in each of their past two outings.

But while home field has been kind to the Patriots, they have struggled on the road this season, suffering outright losses as betting favorites on the NFL odds in three of their past four dates away from Gillette Stadium to finish the season with a middling 3-5 SU road record.

Despite their recent road woes and being pegged as road betting underdogs in NFL playoff football betting for just the third time in 15 contests since 1983, New England has remained resilient on the Super Bowl odds, where it closely trails the Chiefs as a +333 wager to claim its third title in five years.

Chiefs Small Chalk on Sunday’s NFL Betting Lines

However, the Chiefs make their first appearance in an AFC Championship Game since 1994 on a high after disposing of the upstart Indianapolis Colts with a decisive 31-13 win as 4.5-point chalk on the NFL betting lines last weekend.

Powered by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs led the NFL by scoring 35.3 points per game, and have racked up 32.3 points per game over their past three outings. Mahomes is expected to continue his impressive performance this weekend, and is perched as a +225 favorite on the conference championship betting odds to lead all pivots in passing yards.

But it has been the Kansas City defense that has risen to the occasion during the team’s current two-game SU and ATS win streak. The Chiefs surrendered just 16 total points while marching to victories over Oakland and the Colts, improving their home record to 11-2 SU in 13 overall dates since November 2017.

The Chiefs, though, have struggled to produce consistent results when battling the Patriots in recent years. A disappointing 43-30 loss in New England as 3.5-point underdogs on the NFL betting odds earlier this season dropped the Chiefs to 3-4 SU in seven overall dates with the Patriots since November 2004.

That run includes a 27-20 defeat at Gillette Stadium in Divisional Playoff action three years ago while pegged as 6-point underdogs on the NFL betting lines. However, Kansas City has regularly rewarded sports bettors when battling the Patriots, going 6-3 ATS over their past nine in NFL betting action.

The Chiefs have also produced solid results in home dates with New England, going 5-1 SU but covering just twice in six clashes between the teams since 1992.
