Panthers Looking to Rebound as Road Favorites at Falcons on Sunday

Panthers Looking to Rebound at Falcons on Sunday - Bovada Sportsbook

Cam Newton and defending NFC champions have just one win in three games

The defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers (1-2) are off to a rough start this season, and they hope to get back on track Sunday when they visit the Atlanta Falcons (2-1) as three-point road favorites. The total is set at 50 points.

Cam Newton and the Panthers have enjoyed a lot of recent success versus Atlanta and will try to win for the sixth time in eight meetings straight up while covering the spread for the seventh time in nine games.

The Panthers have suffered both of their losses against teams that are currently unbeaten, the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings. Last week, Minnesota came into Charlotte and handed Carolina its first setback at home in 15 games dating back to 2014. The Vikings and Broncos boast two Top 10 defenses though, and the Falcons rank among the very worst in the NFL.

Atlanta is surrendering 433 yards per game, and only the New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders have been worse defensively. Fortunately for the Falcons, they lead the league in total offense with 448 yards per game, which has helped them overcome surrendering an average of more than 30 points.

Matt Ryan Fourth in Passing

Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan is fourth in passing with 970 yards, a remarkable feat considering his top target Julio Jones has made only 10 catches for 188 yards through the first three games.

Last year, these NFC South teams split their two meetings, with the Panthers blanking the Falcons 38-0 in the first game and then falling 20-13 at the Georgia Dome in the second to end their perfect season following a 14-0 start.

Carolina still earned the top seed in the conference before losing 24-10 to Denver as a 4.5-point favorite in Super Bowl 50. The under has cashed in each of the past six meetings.

The Falcons lead the division and can really make a statement with a home victory here. However, they are just 1-6 against the spread in their last seven home games, with the Panthers winning two of the previous three meetings there.

Carolina is also 9-2 ATS in its last 11 October games and will look to extend that trend to kick off the month.
