The stage is set for one of the most highly anticipated rematches in UFC history to close out 2018, with Jon Jones making his return to the octagon to take on Alexander Gustafsson in a battle for the UFC light heavyweight title as a -280 favorite on the UFC 232 odds.

“Bones” has been idle since July 2017, when he tallied a third-round knockout win over Daniel Cormier in a bid to regain the UFC light heavyweight crown. The victory was later overturned after the 31-year-old was flagged for a doping violation that landed him a 15-month suspension, which will end in time for the matchup at T-Mobile Arena on December 29.

A dominant fighter, considered by many as the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, Jones’ career has been marred by doping violations and legal troubles that have resulted in three suspensions, which have limited him to just three octagon appearances since January 2015.

Despite his troubles outside the octagon, Jones remains ranked among the top pound-for-pound fighters in MMA, and currently sits alongside Georges St-Pierre with the longest active win streak in UFC bouts, with 13.

Jones first ascended to the top of the UFC light heavyweight division with a third-round TKO victory over Mauricio Rua, paying out on -180 odds at UFC 128. The native of Rochester, New York followed up with eight successful title defenses, earning performance bonuses on five occasions, including his classic battle with Gustafsson at UFC 165 that also garnered Fight of the Year honors in 2013.

Jones Heavy Chalk in First Fight vs. Gustafsson

Immediately declared as an instant classic, Jones eked out a unanimous decision win in a slugfest with Gustafsson while pegged as a massive -800 favorite. The victory kicked off a stretch of four fights for Jones that would go the distance, including an epic battle with Cormier, who stepped in at UFC 182 in place of Gustafsson, who was forced to withdraw from a planned rematch due to a serious knee injury.

The Swedish UFC star is also returning to the octagon following a lengthy absence, pegged as a +220 underdog on the Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson 2 odds. Winner of six straight fights prior to his memorable clash with Jones, Gustafsson has struggled since, falling to defeat in two of his past four outings, including a five-round split decision loss to Cormier as +230 underdog in his last bid for the UFC light heavyweight crown at UFC 192.

The 31-year-old made his last appearance at UFC Fight Night 109 in May 2017, knocking out Glover Teixeira in the fifth round to pay out on strong -300 odds and earn Fight of the Night honors. However, “The Mauler” has been stymied in recent attempts to return to action.

A planned bout with Luke Rockhold was shelved after the former UFC middleweight champion pulled out due to injury. In addition, a scheduled clash with Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 227 was put on ice after the Swiss star suffered a broken nose and Gustafsson was sidelined with a hamstring injury.
