Johnny Manziel NFL Return Odds are Long

Johnny Manziel NFL Return Odds are Long - Bovada Sportsbook

It has been over two years since Johnny Manziel last played in the NFL. The 25-year-old made headlines for all the wrong reasons during a dismal 2015 NFL season before being released by the Cleveland Browns at the end of that campaign.

However, the former Heisman Trophy winner’s commitment to return to the gridiron for Spring League action earlier this month has renewed speculation about his football future, and fueled +250 odds on Johnny Manziel signing with an NFL team for the 2018 season.

Manziel capped a woeful campaign with the Cleveland Browns by completing just 13 of 24 pass attempts in a lopsided 31-10 loss to the New York Jets in his last NFL appearance in December 2015, and was subsequently cut by the Browns during the offseason.

“Johnny Football” would further distance himself from prospective NFL suitors in the months that followed by regularly placing himself at the center of controversy.

Accusations of domestic abuse dogged Manziel, while a notorious party lifestyle raised concerns about his maturity level, and eventually resulted in a four-game suspension for violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. But since putting his legal issues behind him with a December 2016 plea agreement that required him to undergoing counseling, Manziel has taken significant steps to resume his football career.

In August 2017, Manziel worked out with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League, but the team declined to offer Manziel a contract, and CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie deemed him ineligible to sign with a CFL team during the 2017 season.

Hamilton continues to hold Manziel’s CFL rights, making a 2018 season north of the border a real possibility. However, the real question swirling around the troubled quarterback remains ‘Will Johnny Manziel sign with an NFL team?

NFL Teams Scout Manziel During Spring League

While a return to the Browns seems unlikely, there was no shortage of NFL scouts in attendance as Manziel worked out in preparation for his recent Spring League debut.

As many as 17 NFL teams sent scouts to take a closer look at Manziel, led by the Oakland Raiders, who were reportedly the only team to send multiple scouts to check on Manziel’s progress. And offseason moves have also left a number of NFL teams in the market for upgrades under center.

The Buffalo Bills powered to a 9-7 record this past season to earn the AFC’s second wild card, ending a two-decade playoff drought. However, Buffalo currently sits at a distant +6600 on the Super Bowl odds after parting ways with passer Tyrod Taylor, and could be looking for additional insurance after signing quarterback AJ McCarron in mid-March.

With the future of oft-injured Andrew Luck still uncertain, the Indianapolis Colts may also be in the market for a quarterback, and recent reports have speculated about the possibility of Manziel joining the New England Patriots as Tom Brady’s understudy.

Manziel’s return to action is welcome news, however the jury remains out on his NFL future, leaving the colorful passer as a short -400 bet on the Johnny Manziel NFL return odds to remain on the sidelines during the upcoming NFL campaign.
