Germany World Cup Betting Odds Take Early Hit

2018 World Cup Odds: Germany's Odds Slip

Germany will be desperate for a win to preserve hopes of defending their World Cup title when they take on Sweden on Saturday in a Group F clash as -240 betting favorites.

Die Mannschaft find themselves tied with South Korea at the bottom of the Group F table after suffering a stunning 1-0 loss to Mexico on Sunday, marking the first time a German squad has fallen to defeat in a World Cup group stage opening contest since 1982.

With their loss to El Tri, Germany’s World Cup odds have also taken a tumble, dropping to +800 after sitting at a lofty +450 prior to the start of this year’s tournament.

Germany’s loss to Mexico as -210 chalk leaves the squad with just one victory in their past seven outings across all competitions, which marks their longest stretch of futility since a dismal 1-3-2 win-draw-loss run contributed to an early exit from Euro 2004. Although the club maintains strong -275 odds of advancing from the group stage, the odds for Germany to win Group F have tumbled to +300 after being pegged as -310 pre-tournament favorites.

While a draw with Sweden would be enough to maintain a slim chance of advancing, it would likely result in Germany losing control of their own destiny. Following a draw with Germany, the Swedes would need just a single point in their group stage finale with Mexico to ensure a spot in the knockout stage, while a win by Mexico in Saturday’s clash with South Korea as -175 favorites would virtually clinch a berth for them in the knockout stage.

The Germans have enjoyed a lengthy run of success against Sweden, going 5-2-0 in their past seven overall meetings, including a 2-0 victory in the Round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup. Sweden has also produced a checkered 3-4-3 record in their past 10 outings across all competitions.

Germans in Line for Tough Knockout Stage?

However, with top spot on the Group F table currently looking out of reach, Germany must prepare for a difficult road through the knockout stage, should they advance. As runners up in Group F, Germany would have to face the winners of Group E in the Round of 16, setting the stage for an early showdown with current tournament favorites, Brazil.

The Canarinho also struggled in their group stage opener, playing to a 1-1 draw with Switzerland as -220 favorites, but remain strong -180 favorites to finish atop the Group E table, and will be eager to avenge a crushing 7-1 loss to Germany in the semi-final of the 2014 World Cup.

Brazil has otherwise enjoyed success against Germany, posting wins in five of their past eight meetings across all competitions, capped by a 1-0 victory as +140 favorites in a pre-tournament friendly on March 27, and remain +400 favorites on the 2018 World Cup odds.

Consequently, the Germans are set as a +250 bet to be eliminated in the Round of 16, and sport +800 odds of reaching the World Cup final for the eighth time in tournament history.
