Donald Tops NFL Defensive Player of the Year Odds

NFL Defensive Player of the Year Betting Odds at Bovada

Fans of the Los Angeles Rams breathed a sigh of relief last week as defensive tackle Aaron Donald ended his holdout from training camp by signing a six-year, $135 million contract.

The four-time Pro Bowler held all the cards during his summertime holdout after claiming NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors last season. With contract issues now behind him, Donald returns to action as a co-favorite to repeat as the league’s top defender, pegged at +600 on the NFL Defensive Player of the Year odds.

Donald has been the anchor on the Rams’ defensive line since being selected 13th overall by the team in the 2014 NFL Draft. The former Pittsburgh Panthers star had an immediate impact in his inaugural NFL campaign, racking up 47 combined tackles and nine sacks to garner NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

In addition, Donald has only missed two games in four NFL seasons, and with the star defender expected to be ready for Monday night’s season opener, the Rams have jumped to 4.5-point road favorites in their matchup with the Oakland Raiders.

Watt, Bosa Join Donald Atop Defensive Player Odds

Donald’s co-favorites on the odds to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year award include JJ Watt and Joey Bosa, who are each pegged at +600, while Khalil Mack rounds out the front of the pack at +750.

Watt will be looking to bounce back after appearing in just eight games over the past two seasons. The Houston Texans defensive end emerged as an iron man early in his career, appearing in every contest over his first five seasons, and claiming Defensive Player of the Year honors on three occasions. Watt will now be expected to take on a leadership role on a Texans squad that won just four games last season, but is listed as a -125 wager to return to the NFL playoffs this season.

Bosa continued his ascension into the NFL’s elite ranks last season, following up a Defensive Rookie of the Year performance in 2016 by racking up 70 combined tackles and 12.5 sacks.

The Los Angeles Chargers defensive end missed a trio of preseason contests while recovering from a foot injury. However, Bosa is expected to be ready to start a crucial campaign for the Chargers, who open the season as +140 favorites to claim the AFC West divisional crown and as a +950 wager to claim the AFC championship.

Winner of the Defensive Player of the Year in 2016, Mack was also a holdout from training camp this summer after contract talks with the Raiders broke down.

With the two sides at an impasse, Oakland brass made the decision to deal Mack to Chicago, where he immediately signed a six-year, $141 million contract. The deal has had an immediate impact on the Bears’ Super Bowl odds, which leaped to +6500. However, Chicago remains a distant +800 longshot on the NFC North futures.

Further down the NFL Defensive Player of the Year odds, Von Miller sits at +1000, ahead of Jalen Ramsey at +1200, while Myles Garrett boasts improved +1400 odds.
