Alabama the CFP Championship Favorite

Alabama the CFP Championship Favorite - Bovada Sportsbook

Eleven days have passed since the 2018 College Football Playoff final four was announced, and as was the case then the Sugar Bowl’s two featured teams are also listed as the national title favorites. The Alabama Crimson Tide are the +190 favorites on the national championship odds, and they’re also set as slim 2.5-point favorites against the Clemson Tigers.

Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Jeremy Pruitt, was named the Tennessee Volunteers’ new head football coach last Thursday. However, Nick Saban said his defensive coordinator will return to practice, prep and coach the Crimson Tide through the end of the season. Under Pruitt, the Crimson Tide ranked first in the nation in scoring, second in rushing and seventh in pass defense this past season.

However, as injuries piled up over the last month, the Crimson Tide’s defensive unit showed some cracks in a last-second win over Mississippi State and a loss to Auburn, which kept them out of the SEC Championship Game. Their next challenge is against a balanced Clemson offense which averaged 35 points per game during the regular season.

The Tigers are listed second behind the Tide at +250 on the odds to win the national title.

Georgia, Oklahoma in Pick’em Rose Bowl

The Rose Bowl matchup is set as a pick’em, and the Georgia Bulldogs and the Oklahoma Sooners are both listed at +333 on the odds to win the national championship in January.

The first walk-on-turned-Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma, may have passed for more than 4,300 yards and 41 touchdowns with only five interceptions this past season, but he’ll face Georgia’s fourth-ranked defense in a couple of weeks that allowed just 13 passing touchdowns with 10 interceptions on the season. Whereas Mayfield completed 71% of his passes, the Bulldogs’ defense held opposing triggers to 55%.

It’s also worth noting that an Oklahoma district attorney announced on December 14 that Sooners leading rusher Rodney Anderson will not be charged after a woman accused him of sexual assault. Anderson rushed for 960 yards and 11 touchdowns this season for Oklahoma.

*Odds as of December 15, 2017
