Cardinals chalk against Niners for TNF

Cardinals chalk against Niners for TNF - Bovada Sportsbook

Expected to be Super Bowl contenders this season, the Arizona Cardinals instead head into their Week 5 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night at an ugly 1-3 both straight up and against the spread. The Niners, though, are also 1-3 both SU and ATS on the season, and they’re pegged as 3.5-point home underdogs for the matchup at Levi’s Stadium.

That line, though, has moved slightly in San Francisco’s favor over the past day, down from Arizona -4.5 on the news that Cardinals starting quarterback Carson Palmer has been ruled out for the contest as he deals with a concussion. That leaves Drew Stanton as Arizona’s quarterback for Thursday night; Stanton completed just four of his 11 passes for 37 yards with two interceptions in relief of Palmer last week against the Los Angeles Rams.

That was a 17-13 home loss for Arizona in a game in which they were favored by 10 points. The Cardinals began the season with a 23-21 home loss to the New England Patriots as a 9.5-point favorite, then blasted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 40-7 as a 7-point home favorite before getting beaten 33-18 on the road against the Buffalo Bills as a 4.5-point favorite.

49ers Struggling, SU and ATS

The Niners, meanwhile, didn’t have any trouble with the Rams back in Week 1, blanking them 28-0 as a 2.5-point home underdog. Since that game; however, it’s been all downhill for San Francisco as they lost 46-27 on the road against the Carolina Panthers, 37-18 on the road at the Seattle Seahawks, and 24-17 at home against the Dallas Cowboys – all clear ATS losses.

Blaine Gabbert went 16 of 23 for 196 yards passing for the Niners in their loss to the Cowboys, with one touchdown and one interception. Gabbert has a quarterback rating of just 73.1 on the season, leading to speculation the team could end up turning to Colin Kaepernick.

The Cardinals won both of their games against the Niners last season, by scores of 47-7 as a 7-point home favorite and 19-13 as a 7.5-point road favorite. Over the past two seasons the Cardinals are 3-1 both SU and ATS against San Francisco, with the UNDER having paid out for totals bettors in three of those contests. The total for Thursday night sits at 42.

And Arizona’s slow start to the season has had a big effect on their odds to win Super Bowl 51, as they enter Week 5 down at +2500 on those league futures. The Niners remain longshots on the Super Bowl 51 odds, sitting at +50000 to win the championship this season.
