Cards Home Underdogs on Wednesday MLB Odds

The battle for first place in the NL Central will continue on Wednesday as the St. Louis Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs as -105 underdogs on the MLB betting odds.

St. Louis drew first blood in the three-game series between the divisional rivals, posting a 2-1 win as a +110 wager on the MLB odds on Tuesday to take a narrow one-game lead atop the NL Central standings going into Wednesday night’s matchup at Busch Stadium.

With the win the Cardinals continued their recent dominance over the Cubs on home turf, with wins in four straight, and 10 of 13 since May of last year. In addition, Tuesday’s contest continued a recent low-scoring trend when these two teams meet, with no more than six total runs being scored in five of their past seven matchups.

More importantly for the Cardinals, the win extends a strong run that has lifted the club back into serious postseason contention after turning in shaky results in the first half of the schedule, highlighted by a dismal 6-18 run during the month of May. St. Louis has now posted wins in 13 of its past 17 overall contests, fueling the club’s rise to a respectable +900 to win the NL pennant on the MLB odds.

The Cardinals have played stingy defense during their recent surge, giving up more than three runs on just seven occasions over the past 17 contests. But the team continues to produce mixed results on home turf since starting the season on a 13-4 run at Busch Stadium, racking up a middling 17-18 record at home in their past 35 outings.

Cubs Small Favorites on Odds for Wednesday

Conversely, the Cubs look to put the brakes on a dismal stretch on the road, but remain perched as -115 chalk for Wednesday’s contest.

The Cubs have been among the worst road teams in baseball since seeing a season-best 8-1 run in contests away from Wrigley Field end in mid-May. Chicago has gone 10-24 in 34 road games since, including a 3-13 record against divisional opponents. However, the Cubs’ worrisome record away from home has done little to dent their position on the odds to win the World Series, where they continue to lag just behind the favorites as a +1600 bet.

Chicago fans also have plenty of reason for optimism with Kyle Hendricks set to take the mound in Wednesday’s contest. The Cubs have been virtually unbeatable with the right-hander on the mound, posting victories in each of Hendricks’ past 10 starts against the Cardinals.

The 29-year-old has surrendered just one total earned run over 16.0 innings of work in two previous starts against the Cardinals this season, including a complete game 4-0 victory in Chicago back on May 3. That has fueled a steady 5-2 run for the UNDER in totals betting.

Mike Mikolas is expected to get the call for the Cardinals in Wednesday’s matchup. The right-hander has surrendered at least three earned runs in four of his past five starts, but came away with the win last time out, allowing three earned runs on just five hits over 6.0 innings in the club’s 6-3 win in Pittsburgh as +108 underdogs on the MLB betting lines last Thursday.

Mikolas has also been stellar in recent starts on home turf, giving up just two total earned runs over his past 27 innings of work, a run that started on May 31 with a seven-inning, one-run performance in a 2-1 victory over the Cubs as -142 home chalk in MLB baseball betting. The 31-year-old was tagged for all three runs over four innings in a 3-1 loss at Wrigley Field a week later, but maintains a 3-1 record in six career starts against the Cubs.
