Croatia Trails on Sunday’s World Cup Final Odds

Croatia will be aiming to become the smallest nation to win a World Cup title since Uruguay in 1950 when they hit the pitch against a star-studded French squad on Sunday as +370 underdogs on the World Cup final odds.

Representing a nation with a population of just 4.1 million, the Blazers have emerged as the Cinderella story of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Croatia entered as a distant +3500 bet on the World Cup championship odds, and takes a perfect 6-0-0 win-draw-loss tournament record into Sunday’s matchup at Luzhniki Stadium.

The Croatians have controlled their own destiny throughout the tournament, starting with a march to the top of the Group D table with a trio of victories, capped by a stunning 3-0 rout of Argentina as +295 underdogs in their group stage finale.

That came in contrast to the adversity they endured in the lead up to Russia 2018. A 3-2-3 stretch run in UEFA World Cup qualifying led to the firing of manager Ante Cacic in favor of current bench boss Zlatko Dalic just nine months ago, and was followed by a shaky 2-0-2 run through pre-tournament friendlies.

That experience seems to have benefited the Croatians, who have overcome first-half deficits in each of their three knockout stage victories, claiming wins on penalties over Denmark and Russia before bouncing England with a 2-1 victory in extra time as a +285 bet in semi-final action earlier this week.

While the Blazers are clear underdogs to claim victory in 90 minutes on the France vs. Croatia World Cup lines, they are a +190 bet to emerge as the outright winner in Sunday’s contest, with the odds of the match ending in a draw after 90 minutes pegged at +230.

France Tops Odds to Win the World Cup

However, Croatia will need to dig deep for another character performance against a highly skilled and highly frustrating team from France that prepares for Sunday’s matchup as a -115 favorite on the World Cup odds.

With a roster featuring the likes of Golden Ball betting favorite Kylian Mbappe, team captain Antoine Griezmann, who has potted a pair of goals and added two assists, along with the infuriating defensive play of midfielder N’Golo Kante and defender Raphael Varane, France has clearly demonstrated their ability to shut down opponents with a stifling defense while capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

The result has been three clean-sheet victories at this year’s tournament, capped by Tuesday’s 1-0 triumph over Belgium, who lead the tournament with 15 goals scored, and had averaged 3.25 goals per match during the 24-match unbeaten streak they saw end with this week’s semi-final loss.

Oddsmakers expect another low-scoring affair in Sunday’s decisive contest, with strong -130 odds favoring the goal total going UNDER 2.0, and France benefiting as -220 favorites to eventually claim victory and their first World Cup title since 1998.

However, France has failed to dominate in previous meetings with the Blazers. Les Bleus were forced to settle for a scoreless draw in a 2011 friendly, and needed second-half comebacks to secure a 2-2 draw with Croatia in group stage play at Euro 2004, and to earn a 2-1 win in a semi-final clash at the 1998 World Cup.
