Ayton, Doncic Tight on NBA Rookie of the Year Odds

NBA Rookie of the Year Betting Odds

As expected, Deandre Ayton got the call as the top selection by the Phoenix Suns at last month’s NBA Draft, but he has since slipped from the top of the odds to win the 2018-19 NBA Rookie of the Year award, where he now trails European star Luka Doncic as a +280 bet.

Ayton didn’t disappoint in his lone season with the Arizona Wildcats after emerging as the top player in the 2017 class of college basketball recruits. The native of Nassau, Bahamas established an array of new freshman records at Arizona last season, including total points, total rebounds, and most double-doubles, and paid out as a massive -2500 favorite to go first overall at this year’s draft.

The 19-year-old big man subsequently opened as a solid +260 favorite on the NBA Rookie of the Year odds, but has since seen his position atop the board eroded, while Dallas Mavericks swingman Doncic has climbed to the top of the odds as a narrow +275 favorite.

Selected third overall by the Atlanta Hawks before getting dealt to the Mavericks in exchange for the draft rights to Trae Young and a 2019 first-round pick, the Slovenian teen phenom has gotten NBA ready by playing against men in three seasons with Real Madrid, leading the Spanish squad to this year’s EuroLeague title while earning MVP honors.

Doncic will likely have every opportunity to prove himself in a Mavericks back court that features second-year point guard Dennis Smith Jr., while the recent signing of veteran center Deandre Jordan should give a lift to a Dallas squad that won just 24 games last season, and enters July well back at +12500 on the NBA championship odds.

Bagley, Young Round out NBA ROTY Odds Favorites

Sacramento Kings forward Marvin Bagley sits third on the NBA ROTY odds at +500, while Young rounds out the favorites at +650.

Selected second overall by the Kings, Bagley earned ACC player of the Year honors in his lone campaign with the Duke Blue Devils last season. The 19-year-old also earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors, and set the new ACC standard for most 30-point, 10-rebound double-doubles in a single season.

Young earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors and led the nation in scoring in his single season with Oklahoma, and was selected fifth overall by Dallas at last month’s NBA Draft before getting shipped to Atlanta in the deal for Doncic.

Further down the NBA Rookie of the Year odds, Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr. sits at +1100, ahead of Orlando Magic big man Mohamed Bamba at +1400.

A member of the United States Under-17 squad that claimed gold at the 2016 FIBA World Championships, Jackson was named both Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year last season at Michigan State, while Bamba earned Big 12 All-Defensive Team honors with Texas.

New York Knicks small forward Kevin Knox is knotted with Denver’s Michael Porter Jr. at +1600, followed by Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Collin Sexton at +1800, and Suns guard Mikal Bridges at +2500.
