Warriors Set as 2018 NBA Title Favorites

The Golden State Warriors finished off the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games to win the NBA championship on Monday night. And with the core of their roster set to come back next season the Warriors are the betting favorites on the opening odds to win the 2018 NBA title.

The Warriors went 12-0 through the first three rounds of the playoffs this past spring, sweeping the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz, and San Antonio Spurs to punch their ticket to the NBA Finals for the third season in a row. Golden State won the title two years ago against the Cavaliers, but they blew a 3-1 NBA Finals lead last spring to LeBron James and company.

Golden State then ran out to a 3-0 lead in the 2017 NBA Finals, beating Cleveland 113-91 and 132-113 at home and then 118-113 on the road over the first three contests. The Cavaliers then planted a seed of doubt in the Warriors by winning Game 4 137-116 at home, but Golden State closed out the series on Monday with a 129-120 victory as a 9-point favorite.

And after rolling through the playoffs with a 16-1 record en route to the title, the Warriors are pegged as the -150 favorites on the opening odds to win the 2018 NBA championship as well. Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green – the key pieces of the Warriors’ championship run this spring – are all expected to be back with the team next year.

James will be back with the Cavaliers again next season, as they take another shot at the Warriors after going 1-2 against them over the past two NBA Finals. Cleveland went 12-1 against the Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, and Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference bracket of the playoffs this spring. James has been to the NBA Finals seven straight seasons.

Cavaliers Second Favorites on 2018 Odds

The Cavaliers are set as the +300 second-favorites on the odds to win the 2018 NBA title, with the Boston Celtics and the San Antonio Spurs a step back of the top teams at +1200 on those early futures. The Celtics fell in five games to the Cavaliers in the Eastern Finals, but have the top overall draft pick next week to bolster their roster. The Spurs were swept by the Warriors in the Western Finals, but did have star player Kawhi Leonard injured for that series.

James Harden and the Houston Rockets, who lost to the Spurs in six games in the second round of the NBA playoffs this spring, are listed at +2000 on the NBA championship odds for next season, with the Los Angeles Clippers pegged at +3300, both the Toronto Raptors and the Washington Wizards set at +5000, and the Oklahoma City Thunder then back at +6600.
