Villanova Prevails on 2018 March Madness Odds

Villanova Prevails on 2018 March Madness Odds - Bovada Sportsbook

The Villanova Wildcats brought the college basketball season to a close on Monday night with a decisive 79-62 win over the Michigan Wolverines, rewarding bettors as -300 favorites on the 2018 March Madness Odds.

The win clinched a second national title in three years for the Wildcats, and capped a lengthy campaign that started almost six months ago amid tempered expectations.

After going 15-3 straight up to finish atop the Big East conference standings a year ago, the Wildcats stormed to the Big East Tournament championship and the top overall ranking at the 2017 NCAA Tournament. But a shocking 65-62 loss to No.8 Wisconsin as 5.5-point chalk in second-round action ended the Wildcats’ bid to become the first squad to successfully defend a national championship since 2007.

While the Wildcats returned to action this season with key members of their 2016 championship squad still in the fold, including Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges, they hit the hardwood in November well back of the favorites on the 2018 NCAAB Men’s Championship odds, at +2200.

Villanova quickly silenced the naysayers, opening the 2017/18 campaign with 13 straight SU victories and a 9-4 against the spread record to climb to the top of the AP Top 25 national rankings, and entered the Christmas holiday among the favorites at +600 on the odds to win March Madness.

The regular season was not without adversity, however. The Wildcats lost control of their own destiny in the hunt for top spot in the conference standings during a 3-3 SU run in early February that started with a stunning 79-75 loss to the St. John’s Red Storm as 16-point home favorites. The team also struggled through an erratic 5-5 ATS run in February, but managed to close out the month alongside the Michigan State Spartans and Virginia Cavaliers as +550 co-favorites on the national championship odds.

Villanova Claimed Big East Tournament Title

After ending their conference schedule with a 14-4 SU record, one game back of first-place Xavier, the Wildcats rose to the occasion in the Big East Tournament. Villanova opened with a dominating 94-70 quarter-final win over Marquette as 11.5-point chalk, and enjoyed the benefit of early-tournament upsets in lopsided wins over Butler and Providence to claim their third tournament title in three years.

Despite the accolades, though, the Wildcats found themselves trailing both the Cavaliers and the Duke Blue Devils on the eve of this year’s NCAA Tournament as a +450 national championship bet.

Opening-weekend victories by an average margin of 24.5 points combined with shocking early exits by the Cavaliers, Spartans, Musketeers, and North Carolina Tar Heels failed to boost the Wildcats on the March Madness odds entering the Sweet Sixteen. However, Villanova’s continued dominance in crushing victories over West Virginia and Texas Tech, along with Duke’s ouster by Kansas in the Elite Eight, finally left the Wildcats alone atop the national championship odds entering the Final Four as -110 favorites.

The Wildcats further demonstrated their championship form in a 95-79 Final Four win over the Jayhawks as 5-point favorites before disposing of the Wolverines in Monday night’s title game, but enter the offseason once again trailing Duke as an early +800 bet on the 2019 national championship odds.
