Alabama Favored on National Championship Odds

Alabama Favored on National Championship Odds - Bovada Sportsbook

This year’s college football national championship will be an all-SEC affair as the Alabama Crimson Tide take on the Georgia Bulldogs as 5-point favorites on the national championship odds.

Alabama successfully avenged its loss to Clemson in last year’s national championship contest by claiming a decisive 24-6 Sugar Bowl win over the Tigers as 3.5-point chalk on the College Football Playoff betting lines on New Year’s Day, and now enters Monday night’s game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with their sights set on a fifth national title win in nine years.

The Tide opened the campaign with 11 consecutive straight-up wins but were denied an opportunity to defend their SEC conference title, and came perilously close to falling short of a College Football Playoff berth after suffering a stunning 26-14 loss to Auburn as 5-point road chalk in this year’s edition of the Iron Bowl.

That loss halted a 22-game win streak against SEC conference rivals, and also marked Alabama’s first against the spread loss while pegged as a favorite by fewer than 10 points in a conference matchup since September 2015. However, the Crimson Tide are a middling 6-7 ATS overall this season while covering in consecutive outings on just one occasion.

Monday’s matchup marks the first meeting between these SEC rivals in over two years. Alabama has owned the Bulldogs, averaging 37 points per game in three straight outright road wins, including a 38-10 rout as a 1-point road underdog in October 2015.

However, this year’s national championship game has all the makings of a low-scoring affair. The Crimson Tide defense led the nation for a second straight year with just 11.5 points per game allowed, while the Bulldogs ranked fourth while surrendering 13.2 points per game.

Georgia Dogs on College Football Playoff Betting Lines

The Bulldogs hit the gridiron on Monday gunning for their first national championship win since 1980 after going 12-1 SU on the season including a 28-7 win over Auburn as a 2-point underdog in the SEC championship game.

Georgia has limited opponents to single-digit point totals on five occasions, but allowed its highest point total in over seven years in last week’s 54-48 win over Oklahoma at the Rose Bowl to pay out as 2.5-point favorites, and is now unbeaten ATS in four outings.

The squad also hopes to benefit from the home field advantage they have enjoyed at Sanford Stadium in nearby Athens, Georgia. The Bulldogs are undefeated SU in six home dates this season, and are 15-4 SU since the start of the 2015 campaign. But the team is just 8-11 ATS during that stretch despite allowing more than 20 points in just six of those outings.

This year’s national championship game will also feature a pair of emerging star quarterbacks. Alabama’s Jalen Hurts failed to match the numbers from his spectacular freshman campaign in 2016, but still tossed for 17 touchdowns against just one interception, while Bulldogs pivot Jake Fromm earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors after throwing for 23 scores this past season.
