Astros Sit Atop 2018 American League Odds

Astros Sit Atop 2018 American League Odds - Bovada Sportsbook

The Houston Astros will be looking to bolster their position as strong +265 favorites on the 2018 American League odds when they open a four-game home series with the red-hot New York Yankees on Monday night.

The defending World Series champions have struggled with consistency since powering out of the gate on a 9-2 run. The Astros are coming off a solid 8-4 win over the visiting Oakland A’s as -203 home favorites on Sunday but have compiled a 3-5 record in their past eight at Minute Maid Park that leaves them just two games up on second-place Los Angeles in the AL West standings.

Despite the club’s recent struggles, Houston remains a clear -300 favorite to successfully defend its divisional crown, and also sits atop the World Series odds as a +500 favorite.

The Yankees travel to Houston riding a nine-game win streak after completing a three-game sweep of the Angels with a 2-1 win as a narrow -106 bet. New York’s current tear comes on the heels of a middling 9-9 start, lifting the club alongside the Cleveland Indians to a +450 bet on the odds to win the American League pennant.

As expected, the Yankees have built their success on power at the plate. New York has averaged 7.11 runs per game during its current win streak, and also leads the majors with 41 home runs on the season. However, the Yankees are winless in six straight road dates with the Astros, including all four meetings in Houston during last fall’s ALCS.

Red Sox Second on Odds to Win the American League

The AL East-leading Boston Red Sox represent the Astros’ closest competition on the odds to win the American League pennant, sitting just ahead of the Yankees and Indians at +400.

The Red Sox rocketed to the top of the MLB standings with the best season start in their 118-year history, winning 17 of 19 out of the gate, fueling their rise from +1200 to +700 on the World Series odds, but the club has struggled since, going 3-5 in its past eight outings.

Boston also must contend with recent disappointing play in the postseason. The Red Sox have made early playoff exits the past two years, including a lopsided loss to Houston in last year’s ALDS, but have been among the stingiest squads in the majors in the early going of 2018, surrendering just 3.35 runs per game, while Boston batters lead the American League with a team average of .271.

Conversely, the Indians have fallen upon hard times during the first month of the campaign. Cleveland extended its inconsistent start with a 10-4 loss to Seattle as -117 home chalk on Sunday afternoon, and has gone a middling 6-7 over its past 13 outings. However, the Indians continue to lead the way in the underachieving AL Central with a three-game lead over second-place Detroit, and are pegged as hefty -550 favorites to claim a third straight divisional title.

The Angels have followed up a 13-3 start with a dismal 3-9 run but remain a solid +700 bet on the MLB American League futures odds, well ahead of the surprising Toronto Blue Jays at +1200, and the Minnesota Twins at +1400, while the Mariners hold steady at +2200.
