Astros, Yankees Atop 2018 American League Champion Odds

Astros, Yankees Atop 2018 American League Champion Odds - Bovada Sportsboook

A tight three-way race has emerged atop the 2018 American League Champion odds, with the Houston Astros and New York Yankees leading the way as short +275 co-favorites, followed by the Cleveland Indians at +325.

Just four years removed from an MLB-worst 51-111 campaign, the Astros racked up 101 victories last season to claim their first divisional crown in 16 years. Houston has also returned to spring training action with their 2017 World Series championship roster largely intact.

The Astros’ rotation features former Cy Young Award winners Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel, while the club’s offensive attack is led by reigning NL MVP Jose Altuve and World Series MVP George Springer. However, despite their depth, the Astros are not favored to repeat as World Series champions, trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers at +550 on those MLB futures odds.

The Yankees proved to be the biggest newsmakers of the offseason after boldly pulling the trigger on a trade with the Miami Marlins that will have reigning NL home run king Giancarlo Stanton wearing pinstripes in 2018. Stanton led the majors last season with 59 long balls, and joins a Yankees offense that features AL Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge and catcher Gary Sanchez, who combined to go yard on 85 occasions last year.

New York’s impressive offensive performance helped it exceed expectations in 2017. The Yankees opened the campaign as a distant +2500 World Series wager, but silenced the naysayers by winning 91 games, and came within one win of a World Series berth before losing to Houston in the ALCS in seven games.

The Indians posted 102 wins last season to claim their second straight AL Central crown, but wilted in the postseason, falling to the Yankees in the ALDS in five game. Like Houston, the Indians return to action with last season’s roster largely intact. However, Cleveland remains well back of the favorites in World Series betting, with +850 odds.

Red Sox Trail on 2018 American League Futures

Farther down the 2018 MLB American League odds, the Boston Red Sox are pegged at +600, well ahead of the Los Angeles Angels at +1400. The Minnesota Twins are knotted with the Seattle Mariners at +1800, followed by the Toronto Blue Jays at +2000.

The two-time AL East champion Red Sox tried to keep pace with the Yankees during the offseason. The club inked slugger JD Martinez to a five-year deal, and will benefit from a full return to health by starter David Price. However, the Red Sox have been a postseason disappointment since their last World Series win in 2013, winning just one total game in two ALDS appearances.

The Angels hope to overcome a dismal 4-10 finish to last season that quickly took them out of postseason contention, and sit well back of Houston as a +500 wager to win the AL West, while the Mariners hope to build on a 78-win season and end a 17-year playoff drought.

After reaching the postseason in consecutive years, the Blue Jays took a step back last season, struggling to a 76-86 record, and are already facing adversity in 2018. After falling to injury in the early days of spring training, both ace starter Marcus Stroman and all-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki have been sidelined indefinitely, and are not expected to be available on Opening Day.
