Romo Among Favorites in Celeb Golf Event

Romo Among Favorites in Celeb Golf Event - Bovada Sportsbook

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is among the favorites on the betting board to win the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe this week. Romo leads a star-studded field that includes 89 celebrities as one of the top choices at +425. Only former MLB pitcher Mark Mulder has better odds at +400.

Romo retired following last season due to injuries sustained during his career along with the emergence of Dak Prescott, who ended up winning NFL Rookie of the Year honors after leading the Cowboys to a league-best 13-3 mark and the NFC East title.

But the 37-year-old has been an avid amateur golfer over the years, previously attempting to qualify for the 2004 Byron Nelson Championship and the 2005 U.S. Open on the PGA Tour. He later qualified for the 2008 Byron Nelson Championship but failed to make the cut.

Meanwhile, Mulder also suffered numerous injuries in his baseball career before hanging up the spikes in 2010. He briefly attempted a comeback in 2014 but failed and has since concentrated on golf. The 39-year-old is the two-time defending champion of this event. Former pitcher Rick Rhoden has won the tourney a record eight times.

Super Bowl Champ Rypien Follows Favorites

Rhoden is not competing this year, but two-time champ Mark Rypien is back. The former Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback is tied for the fifth choice to take home his third title at +1600 with former NHL star Jeremy Roenick and MLB Hall of Famer John Smoltz.

In between them and the top two favorites on the betting board (Mulder and Romo) are former tennis player Mardy Fish (+550) and actor Jack Wagner (+1400), who has also won it twice previously. A bet on the field is worth +4400.

Other notable celebrities participating in this year’s American Century Championship include point guard Stephen Curry (+2800) of the Golden State Warriors, quarterback Aaron Rodgers (+5500) of the Green Bay Packers, and singer Justin Timberlake (+6600).

Curry and Rodgers are two of a few active athletes who are competing. Rypien won the first event back in 1990 with Rhoden then capturing five of his titles in odd-numbered years through 1999. Rhoden won his last three in 2003, 2008 and 2009.
