Simmons Soars on Latest NBA ROY Odds

Simmons Soars on Latest NBA ROY Odds - Bovada Sportsbook

After spending the past four years buried at the bottom of the NBA standings the Philadelphia 76ers have emerged as a legitimate playoff contender this season, powered by the impressive debut of point guard Ben Simmons who has climbed to a heavy -2000 favorite on the NBA futures to claim Rookie of the Year honors.

Simmons was selected first overall by Philadelphia at the 2016 NBA Draft, but was subsequently sidelined by a broken foot that forced him to miss all of last season. However, the 21-year-old Australian has shown no ill effects from the injury in the early going of the current campaign, leading all rookies with 17.9 points per game going into the 76ers’ game against the visiting Phoenix Suns at Wells Fargo Center on Monday night.

Named a first-team All-American in his lone collegiate season with the LSU Tigers, Simmons stormed onto the NBA stage with two triple-doubles and five double-doubles in his first 10 appearances with the Sixers, and also leads all NBA rookies with 9.4 rebounds per game.

Simmons’ team-leading 7.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game have further contributed to the 76ers’ climb into fifth place in the NBA Eastern Conference standings, and have garnered him consideration on the NBA MVP futures odds, where he is currently listed at +5000.

Tatum, Markkanen, Smith Follow on Odds

A quartet of top picks from the 2017 NBA Draft sit well back of Simmons on the NBA Rookie of the Year odds. Boston’s Jayson Tatum trails at +1400, ahead of Chicago’s Lauri Markkanen, who joins Dallas point guard Dennis Smith at +1500, while Lonzo Ball trails at +1800.

Tatum has fit right in on a star-studded Celtics squad that powered to the top of the NBA standings during a recent 16-game straight-up win streak. The 19-year-old’s 15 points in the Celtics’ 116-111 win over Phoenix as 12-point home chalk on Saturday gives him 13.8 points per game on the year.

Markkanen has emerged as one of the few bright spots during a dismal campaign for the last-place Bulls. The 20-year-old Finn has notched six double-doubles in his first 21 outings and leads Chicago with eight rebounds per game while draining 14.5 points per game.

Smith has racked up 14.2 points per game in just 28.1 minutes per game for a struggling Mavericks squad, while Ball has kept his composure through sometimes harsh criticism during his debut with the Lakers and leads Los Angeles with 7.1 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game through his first 22 games.

Further down the NBA Rookie of the Year odds, Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell is pegged at +2000, followed by Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox at +2800.
